James was born on July 9th, 1858 in 18 Baltic St., Montrose.1  James' father was John Glen and his mother was Mary-Anne Morton.  His paternal grandparents were James Glen and Elizabeth Cameron; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Morton and Lady Sarah Quin. He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, David, Anne, Elizabeth, Mary-Jane, Sarah and Williamina.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
